How to Fill Tires With Air: Step by Step

Achieving the right car tire pressure is easy when you do it on your own. Follow these easy steps to learn how to fill tires with air:

  1. Pull up to the air pump at your local gas station. If you have an air pump, you can do this at home.
  2. Make sure the air hose reaches all four tires.
  3. Remove the cap from the tire valve on the first tire.
  4. Put the cap in your pocket or on a car seat to make sure you don’t lose it.
  5. Use the tire gauge to check the air pressure in the tire.
  6. Inflate the tire to the right pressure, if needed, using short bursts to make sure you don’t overinflate the tire.
  7. Repeat this process for the other three tires.

We highly recommend having your own tire pressure gauge on hand because the ones at gas stations aren’t 100% reliable. That way, you don’t accidentally add too much air when asking yourself, “How much air should I put in my tires?”

If you do add too much air, just release some of the air. Press the pin on the tire valve with the back of the air hose nozzle or the small knob on the back of the rounded end of the tire gauge. If you let out too much air, fill it back up with just a little bit.

How Much Air Should I Put in My Tires?

Every vehicle has a sticker inside the driver’s door along the frame that will display the recommended car tire pressure for your model. You can also check the owner’s manual. Generally, passenger cars suggest 30 to 35 psi (pound per square inch) when they’re cold, depending on the make and model. Check the tire pressure with your gauge when the vehicle is cold. When inflating your tires, keep the following in mind:

  • Don’t inflate your tires to the psi given on the actual tire. This number indicates the maximum amount of pressure the tire can hold, not its recommended psi. When thinking to yourself, “How much air should I put in my tires?” do not go by the number on the tire itself.
  • A stiff, bouncy ride is the first sign of overinflated tires. Your car is also harder to handle as you drive around La Vista.
  • Underinflated tires can lead to faster tire wear and tear.
