What Does Rotating Tires Mean?

Mechanic with Tires

The service team at Edwards Nissan hears a lot of questions from Council Bluffs drivers. Some of the most common questions are, “What is tire rotation?” and “What does rotating tires mean?” Tire rotation is performed to keep any one tire from wearing out faster than the others. It typically extends the life of the entire set of tires and is essential to maintaining traction, preventing blowouts, and can even improve fuel economy on your Omaha drives. Learn more about tire rotation with the Edwards Nissan service team, and contact us if you have questions.

What is Tire Rotation?

Tire rotation is the process of rotating tires to different positions on your vehicle. Typically, the front tires are moved to the rear, and the rear tires are moved to the front. Sometimes the tires may also change sides, so the one that was on the rear left position will end up as the front right tire. These are some tire rotation basics:

  • Most vehicles are heavier in the front, so the front tires typically wear out faster. Still, the type of drivetrain will affect the rate of deterioration.
  • For example, in FWD vehicles, the power is sent to the front axle and wheels. That means the front tires will wear down faster than they would on a rear-wheel, four-wheel-drive, or all-wheel-drive vehicle.
  • The type of drivetrain affects the recommended tire rotation pattern so that no tire wears down faster than the others.

What Does Tire Rotation Do?

  • Improves Efficiency: Worn tires cause drag and strain the engine, which increases fuel consumption as you drive around Bellevue.
  • Prevents Blowouts: Tires become more likely to blow as they wear down, and the tread gets thinner. If you’ve ever had a tire blowout, you know it’s scary and potentially dangerous!
  • Maintains Traction: When tires wear down, the tread gets thinner. Less tread depth means less traction, which may interfere with your ability to control your car in certain situations.
  • Improves Performance: Tires that have uneven wear produce vibration, which you can often feel through the steering wheel.
